The Abbey

The magnificent ruins of Whitby Abbey overlook the town. This has inspired generations from Saints to Dracula. The indoor History Gallery digs deeper into the Abbey’s history with interactive “talking heads” of personalities from the past.

Whitby Abbey and St Marys Church. 199 steps leads you to the ruins of Whitby Abbey and Heritage Centre, and St Marys Church and graveyard where you can pause at Caedmons Cross a Memorial to the earliest known English Poet.

Walking & Cycling

Heathfield is a great base for walkers, as well as being on the Cleveland Way there are 2 excellent walks from the door to Whitby Abbey and the Coast and From Whitby to Runswick Bay’.

For cyclists: The old Railway Line to Scarborough is part of the national cycle network and for mountain bikers there are numerous forest trails to explore.

Museums & places of interest

The Captain Cook Memorial Museum. Harbourside house to which Captain James Cook lodged as an apprentice on Grape Lane.

The Whalebones and Captain James Cook Monument. Situated on the West Cliff with beautiful views of the Eastside, Swing Bridge and Harbour.

Whitby Museum and Pannet Park and Art Gallery. Whitby Museum has retained its traditional atmosphere. It displays a host of fascinating and curious exhibits reflecting Whitby’s past, including Fossils and Whitby jet.

Pictorial Archives and Heritage Centre. Home to hundreds of old photographs of Whitby and the surrounding area.

The Dracula Experience. Take a tour through the Dracula story and experience his connections to Whitby. There are also ghost walks through the streets of Whitby.

Leisure activities

Whitby Leisure Centre. There are a variety of sports facilities including a gym and a swimming pool which are all open to the public.

Whitby Golf Course. Open to non members to play.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Take a steam train from Whitby, through Grosmont and Goathland (The famous Heartbeat TV Series location) and Levisham to Pickering.

Moors National Park Centre at Danby. Free Admission,walks and trails with a indoor and outdoor area. There are regular events and exhibitions along with a Tea room and gift shop.

Whitby Pavillion Complex is Whitby’s largest Theatre and function venue hosting a variety of acts.

Beacon Farm is famous for it’s ice cream, you can also experience Ruswarp Pleasure Boats, the Minature Railway, Putting and a Monster Experience. Children’s Play area.

Dalby Forest:Nature Trails, walks, and an activity centre. Dalby Forest also has a Go Ape adventure centre and a Cafe.
